To Kill A Mockingbird: Part 1

To Kill a Mockingbird has not been as bad I thought it would be. I like how the book is just straight foward. There has been nothing confusing and I acutally think I understand everything that is going on.
So far I think Scout has been my favorite character. She is not afraid to just be herself and I admire that. I think it is kind of sad that the people of that time can't accept that though. People like Mrs. Dubose would always bash her for being in overalls and not in a dress. However, it makes me wonder, would Scout be the tomboy she is now if her mom was still alive? I think that she wouldn't be as tomboy because she would also have a woman figure to look up to. I think Scout is a strong little girl, but what will happen when the prejudice gets worse. Will she be able to ignore it or go crazy?

  1. I completely agree. I think that if she had a mother or even a mother figure, someone that she could look up to then she would probably be more of a girl. But, i think if she was more of a girl, them her and Jem wouldn't have the same type of relationship.

  2. I really like what you wrote. Although, I would hve to argue that Scout would be the same way sh is now if her mother was still alive. The way Scout is in the story makes the novel. This is a little off topic but I'm sicking of hearing about how little girls should wear dresses! (: I also agree that its interesting to find out how Scout will react to outlash from the trial as it progresses.

  3. I agree! I also included in my blog that if her mother was alive she might be different. I think that the reason she is a tomboy is because she doesnt know any better and has no motherly figure in her life. I also wonder if she will be able to handle all of the racism and rude remarkes toward her father. Personally i think she will be strong and keep her head on straight.

  4. I don't want to think about how different Scout would be if her mother were still alive. I don't want to think about Scout being different at all. Scout is such an amazing character for (obviously) the reasons you've discussed. Scout is NEVER afraid to be herself. That's such an admirable quality, especially in such a young girl.

  5. I love that you pointed out the fact that the book has been so straight up and not confusing so far. I comepletely agree. I also love that you questioned the way Scout would be if her mother was still alive. Personally, I still think she would be the loveable, tomboy character she already is. Great blog.

  6. Good point about the rekation between Scout's tomboyishness and her dead mother. It got me thinking and suddenly some things made sence. Scout wouldnt be Scout if her mom was alive. She would act more like a ladie, but raised in a family of boys she cant blossom as a girl and to keep u has to be a little bit of a tomboy.
